Mothers Day
plural for all the mothers out there
Even those who wanted to be mothers
but couldn’t or perhaps haven’t yet
For those who are separated from their mothers
be it by death, distance, or discord
And let’s include those mothers who weren’t there when we needed them
who are more interested in being right than relating
and who were and are still a thorn in our side
But don’t forget the substitute mothers
who we were able to glean glimpses of grace
who provided us with a real representation of what a mother could be
For those mothers to whom we are grafted
mothers in law who welcome and accept us
who love us as their own
and who cheer us on along the way
And for ourselves
We can be our own mothers
Take care of ourselves
Choose who is valuable in our lives
Give ourselves a break when we mess up
Apologize
Shake off our old habits
and start again
For all the imperfect mothers
